Hotel Esencia

Mexico – March 2019

The following morning we feast on one of the most amazing breakfast burritos we’ve ever had. Scrambled eggs with guacamole, kale and cheese in a perfect tortilla goes down quickly and we’re tempted to order a second but Mayan ruins await. A short drive from the hotel we discover a cenote that is hauntingly beautiful. We beat the crowds and sit for some time before deciding to head back to our hotel for another day of lazing about. Yes, we could explore but Hotel Esencia is paradise in itself and there’s no place we’d rather be.

We’re only a short buggy ride from the main road but we feel like we’re deep in the Yucatan jungle arriving at Hotel Esencia. Birds are calling from up high and we’re surrounded by lush palm fronds that sway in the breeze.

Secluded on it’s own near-private beach with Tulum 45 minutes away, Hotel Esencia is a stylish bolthole with only 42 suites that was once the home of an Italian Duchess. Our jungle suite is a white-on-white open space with a built in deep sunken lounge, Italian furnishings and Mexican textiles. There’s a sparkling white bath, a huge rain shower and a plunge pool that beckons for a welcome cool down.

But first, mezcal. We race down through the main building, a whitewashed three-storey Casa Grande, across the grounds to the most beautiful beach we’ve ever seen.  Super fine sand squeaks beneath our feet as we bound in to crystal clear turquoise water. Its warm and we could quite happily float for hours, but we spot staff bringing our cocktails and nachos to our beach hut.

Chips and guacamole seem to be free flowing and the sun beats down on us lulling us in to one of those afternoon naps that hasn’t been seen since our days at university. It’s hard to wake up but there’s a sunset that calls for a long walk along the beach. It’s incredibly peaceful and we could walk forever but we hear music playing back at the resort and lights twinkling in the distance. It’s taco night at Hotel Esencia and the grounds have transformed in to an elegant fiesta where guests float about in designer kaftans and staff hand out margaritas on arrival. We visit the taco station one too many times filling up on pulled beef and fish tacos before dancing it all off in to the night under glowing lanterns.
